Description

This is an idea that I've had in my head and been working on for awhile but just got around to finishing, lol. I've seen a lot of seriously tl,dr forum threads and I thought, "wouldn't it be funny to make an actual literal teal deer? So I bought a few skeins of teal yarn when it was on sale (Red Heart Soft Yarn worsted weight) and started sketching out the design. I was also gifted with a book of amigurumi patterns which featured instructions on how to make a deer so I used that as kind of a jumping off point, although once I got through sketching the design it was really easy to write out the pattern itself. I did have to test the pattern, frog it, and test again several times to make sure that the shapes looked right. Crocheting amigurumi is really like sculpting in that respect, I suppose. I thought about making the tip of the deer's nose and tail cream but ultimately I picked Red Heart Soft Yarn in seafoam, but maybe it would have looked better in cream? I don't know. So anyway, I sewed the legs and tail to the torso, then started work on the head. I found a guy on ebay who sells stuffed animal eyes and got some big safety eyes and fuzzy animal noses, and cut the eye detail out of felt and then embroidered over them with size 5 black perle cotton. I used some Aleene's Platinum Bond fabric glue to apply the felt to the head because otherwise I'd have to use invisible thread and sew it and as a very famous lady once put it, ain't nobody got time for that. After finishing the head, I used some iridescent white sequins and seed beads for the fawn's spots and I really wish I could either get beads with bigger holes or a smaller needle. All in all, she took me about twenty hours of work total to complete and she stands about nine inches tall, plus some fiddling with the photo. Maybe I should take some new pictures tomorrow and make sure the natural light is better.
